As you can see from these two pictures I'm constantly auditioning fabrics as I go along all the way up to the last few pieces I sew on. I use the sew and flip method when piecing blocks.
Below is the finished block. The last thing I do after piecing the block is a basting stitch around the edge of the block before I begin embellishing.

Grrr. Blogger ate my comment again. I like your block. That's more or less the way I piece mine. Always looks better when you see someone else's, though. =)
