Rumors have been going around Louisville for over a month that our beloved Baer's Fabrics was going out of business. I guess I didn't want to believe it but today if you pull up their web site you see that after 103 years!!!! of business they are closing their doors for good. No notice just good bye and so long.

<> .... what in the world will the fabric lovers of Louisville and the world do without them?

This is such sad news for me as I went there all the time. I took my friends from out of town there ... I just loved that store. There is no explanation as to why, but my guess is the economy finally won the battle.

I went down to say goodbye to friends this morning and the store was packed!!! 1000's of people had the same idea and it was sad. You couldn't park within a mile of the store. People crying and store employees who have been there for years trying to keep up with the pace. No going out of business sale just everyday prices and I managed to spend a few dollars on my last visit there.

There just won't ever be another place like it. Unique fabrics, an old warehouse, three floors of anything and everything fabric and sewing related. I feel sad.

Karen, that IS sad. My favorite store in my area closed also, about a year ago, and we've had another quit since then. Neither of them was the local institution yours was, however. "G Street" in Washington, D.C, was like your store, with tons of great fabric and accessories, but I think it has moved to the suburbs.

Meanwhile, in the Dallas area, we've had two other new quilt stores open up. Nothing can replace the old establishments like your store, though. (Is internet shopping the death knoll for these local shops?)

That is so sad. I can only imagine how I would feel if my favorite privately owned quilting/fabric store closed. However, mine is a small store. I'd love to have a real fabric store like yours sounded like in my area. I'm hoping I'll get to Mary Jo's in NC this fall.
